Lena meets troubled teen Callie and asks her to temporarily move in with her family in the series premiere of this drama about a lesbian couple heading up a multiethnic family comprised of a biological son and a few adopted children.

Callie joins a group home after committing a crime. Brandon tells the truth about the reason Callie ran away. Meanwhile, Mariana helps with the school play to impress a guy named Chase.

Brandon’s band go on a hike as they seek inspiration. Meanwhile, Callie worries about Jude and how her actions have affected him

Lena and Mike disagree about whether to punish Brandon. Elsewhere, Jesus tries to cover for Mariana and puts his health at risk in the process, while Callie gets blamed for Mariana’s transgression; and Jesus and Lexi embark on a secret relationship.

Stef has been shot and it’s not a minor wound. Flashbacks are used to tell the history of how Lena and Stef met and how the family was formed.

After Callie runs away, the family try to find her. Jude is angry with Brandon about what he did the day of the wedding, so he feels even more guilty about Callie running away.

All the kids manage to go to the same Mexican Street festival. Callie has a relapse of her panic attacks as Ana tries to correct her past mistakes with help from Mike.
