Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020), an adaptation film of the acclaimed play by August Wilson. It tells the story of a tense recording session in 1920s Chicago, where the legendary blues singer Ma Rainey clashes with her ambitious trumpeter Levee and her white producers over artistic control and racial exploitation. The film explores themes of music, power, identity, and trauma, as well as the legacy of the Black experience in America. The film features stellar performances by Viola Davis as Ma Rainey and Chadwick Boseman as Levee, in his final role before his untimely death.
